What class of DSC should I buy?

DSC is now sold in only one class : Class-3. There will be no more Class-2 sold from 2021 as per CCA guidelines. Class-3 DSC is sufficient to sign documents for a large variety of purposes – including tax returns (Income Tax /GST), invoice signing (Tally or PDF), completing Director’s KYC, register new business firm on MCA Portal(ROC), applying Import Export Code (IEC), EPF Portal, etc. Some Tender Portals require vendors to use Class-3 Digital Signature with encryption combo. Apart from that It is used for e-bidding, e-auction, e-ticketing, trademark & patent registrations, ice gate, central board of excise etc.

What is DSC for Individual and DSC for Organizations

Individual user DSC includes applicant’s name, mobile number, email id, pan, state in digital signature and it is either directly varified with the aadhar of the applicant. In other words, individual user DSCs do not includes organization name in DSC. Any Indian and foreign Individual user falls under that category.

Organization user DSC contains organization name, applicant name, email id, personal PAN no, state name. In case of DGFT DSC, it also contains IEC and branch code. Proprietorship, Partnership, Private Limited, LLP, Society, Trust and government organization, foreign organization user all comes under that category.

What variant of DSC should I buy?

Class 3 DSCs have different variant based on usage and security standard. Except otherwise instructed or intimated – Individual DSCs are commonly used for most of the purposes. Only thing is that DGFT DSC used for DGFT portal/foreign trade is by default an organization DSC. Under individual DSC, major variants are Signing Only DSC, Combo DSC (Signing + Encryption). Different government portal prescribe different variant of DSCs for user operations.
